Meet the Founders

Sigma Geoscience was founded by two structural geologists who met in grad school at Montana State University and have spent the years since working on opposite sides of the geoscience world: one in industry, one in field mapping and academia.

Jacob Thacker

Co-founder

Jacob leads technical development of Stereogram.

Jacob holds a Bachelor’s in Geology from Cleveland State University and a Master’s in Structural Geology from Montana State University, where he studied a fault in the Stillwater Complex of the Beartooth Mountains. He earned his PhD from the University of New Mexico, conducting research on intracontinental tectonism using structural analysis, basin analysis, and thermochronology.

He subsequently worked as a Field Geologist for the New Mexico Bureau of Geology, and since 2022 he has been an academic geologist based in Billings, Montana, currently teaching for Rocky Mountain College.

Julian Stahl

Co-founder

Julian had the initial vision for Stereogram. He brings a structural geology background combined with deep experience designing geoscience technology.

Julian holds a Bachelor’s in Geology from UC Santa Barbara and a Master’s in Structural Geology from Montana State University, where he conducted structural analysis in the Bighorn Basin of Wyoming.

After grad school, Julian worked at OnX Maps in Missoula, Montana, before moving into the energy-tech sector. Today, he leads worldwide commercial strategy at Rogii as VP of Global Sales, where Rogii develops subsurface geoscience and drilling software used in 30+ countries.

Our Goal

To make integrated field geoscience and structural analysis software with advanced functionality that is modern and intuitive.

Geoscience has never lacked capable tools, it lacks tools that talk to each other. A measurement is written on a phone or a notebook, retyped into a spreadsheet, exported to a stereonet program, plotted again in a GIS, and redrawn a fourth time for the report. Every hop is a chance to lose context, break a convention, or quietly corrupt a number. Stereogram exists to close that loop: one dataset, captured in the field and carried without translation through analysis, interpretation, and presentation.

Integrated means the outcrop and the office are the same project. Stations, planes, lineations, faults and photos recorded on a phone, offline, in the rain, out of signal, sync to a full workspace where the same data drives maps, stereonets, rose diagrams, 3D views, and downstream analysis side by side. Change a grouping, and every linked view updates with it.

Modern and intuitive means the software should not be the hard part. Software in this field has too often demanded that geologists learn its interface before they can do their geology, obscure dialogs, rigid import formats, workflows preserved unchanged since the 1990s. Stereogram aims for the opposite: sensible defaults, direct manipulation, forgiving data import, and interfaces that reveal depth as you need it rather than all at once.

Our Vision

Seamless geoscience software for any level, sector, or project.

We want a single environment that a student meets in their first structural geology course and never has to outgrow.

Any level. An undergraduate plotting their first fifty measurements and a research group processing hundreds of thousands should be working in the same tool, differing only in how much of it they use.

Any sector. Structural geology, mapping, mineral exploration, engineering geology and geotechnics, energy, hydrogeology, and government surveys all measure the same orientations against the same conventions, then diverge in what they need from them. One rigorous foundation should serve all of them, rather than each sector maintaining its own partial, incompatible tooling.

Any project. From a single afternoon at one outcrop to a multi-season regional programme with several field teams, the workflow should not change shape as the data grows, it should just keep working.
